What Is a Lactation Consultant?

Lactation Consultants are professionals trained to help mothers with unusual or routine breastfeeding situations. An LC with the designation IBCLC (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant), has received certification from the International Lactation Consultant Examiners by passing an examination, which documents the attainment of special knowledge and skills that facilitate breastfeeding. Lactation Consultants provide consultations and/or breastfeeding aids, and coordinate their services with health care professionals, as difficulties with breastfeeding can have many causes.

A consultation consists of taking a history relevant to the mother's and infant's situation and provides a time in which questions on breastfeeding are answered. After evaluation, appropriate techniques to help establish and maintain lactation are taught. When necessary, breastfeeding aids are recommended and instructions for maximizing the effectiveness of the equipment are given.

"I was particularly grateful for your enthusiasm and overall support. You are extremely sensitive to the needs of a frustrated, disappointed and exhausted new mom. I was appreciative of your positive attitude as my confidence was at an all time low. Even well meaning loved ones had been eager to resort to formula. Your understanding of the pressures brought on by a society where breastfeeding is not standard and your ability to share experiences helped build my self-esteem to make nursing successful."
