Many people assume mother and baby just naturally know how to breastfeed. Breastfeeding, however, goes more smoothly when mother has a basic understanding of breastfeeding management. Babies are born with instincts and reflexes but not knowledge of breastfeeding. Breastfeeding is learned.

Now you and your family can learn about breastfeeding in your own home, either before baby is born or you can have a breastfeeding evaluation after baby's birth, from a certified lactation consultant. Payment required at the time of service. Some health care plans may provide reimbursements.

Mothers in atypical situations may require more specific instruction, sometimes special equipment, and a great deal of encouragement.

Reader's comments:

I wish I had ordered and listened to your audiobooks previously to my baby’s birth as so many worries and stressful situations in the hospital could have been avoided had I had the knowledge that you present in them.

I’m so impressed with the information on your audiobooks and love the whole ethos of nursing being a partnership. Thank you! I think your books are very empowering as they help a mother to realize she is the expert on her baby. And by reading cues she feels more confident.

"I was particularly grateful for your enthusiasm and overall support. You are extremely sensitive to the needs of a frustrated, disappointed and exhausted new mom. I was appreciative of your positive attitude as my confidence was at an all time low. Even well meaning loved ones had been eager to resort to formula. Your understanding of the pressures brought on by a society where breastfeeding is not standard and your ability to share experiences helped build my self-esteem to make nursing successful."
